History
Teater Ekamatra was founded in 1988 by playwright, director and dramatist Lut Ali and his wife Rubie Lazim. They wanted to create a space for artists of all backgrounds to develop and create a contemporary experimental style of Malay theatre that fused traditional Southeast Asian theatre styles with contemporary techniques. This was a departure from the folktale-based Malay theatre that then characterised the Malay theatre scene in Singapore.
Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Teater Ekamatra continued to push boundaries in creating theatre and providing ground-breaking platforms for artists of all backgrounds.
In addition to main season productions, Teater Ekamatra also worked with various arts and community groups, schools, and has been commissioned by multiple international festivals including Singapore International Festival of Arts and Festival Tokyo.
Since its inception, Teater Ekamatra has dedicated time and resources to developing and platforming some of Singapore’s most ground-breaking artists.
