Since the inception of the company, we have created spaces for people to learn, experiment, develop their practice and find their way into the arts. merEKA continues that work, giving participants the opportunity to learn from experienced practitioners, build their skills, explore ideas and create work of their own.
Our programmes are open to people at different stages of their journey, whether you’re just starting out, looking to build on an existing practice or simply curious to try something new. And they’re free of charge, because we believe that access to learning and artistic development should be open to everyone.
Over the years, artists who have come through Ekamatra’s development programmes have gone on to become writers, directors, actors, producers and arts practitioners in Singapore. Some came with years of experience, while others were simply looking for a place to begin.

Arts Managers Development
Arts Management 101 offers practical learning opportunities for anyone interested in the work that happens behind the scenes of the arts. From producing and fundraising to production, stage and technical management, these programmes explore the skills, knowledge and ways of working that help bring creative projects to life.
Technical Management 101
Every seamless performance is built on countless technical decisions behind the scenes. Technical Management 101 is an introductory workshop designed for emerging stage managers, producers, theatre-makers, and anyone curious about what happens behind the scenes.
Across four sessions, participants will gain practical knowledge in:
- Venue schematics and staging
- Set planning and technical considerations
- Lighting, sound, and multimedia fundamentals
- Risk management and safety practices
- Production workflows and problem-solving
Whether you're looking to build your technical confidence or deepen your understanding of theatre production, this workshop offers a solid foundation in the essentials of technical management.
Facilitator: A Kumaran
AK is a technically inclined individual who enjoys the challenges of problem solving. He enjoys putting a plan on paper, and watching it take shape in real life. Especially so when it involves technology. He also specialises in lighting design for dance and theatrical productions. He can also often be found with a camera trying to find interesting perspectives of uninteresting things.
Production & Stage Management 101 Workshops
Led by experienced production and stage manager and Teater Ekamatra’s General Manager, Khairina Khalid, this five-session workshop gives participants an insight into the essential skills and knowledge required to be a production or stage manager.The workshop covers:
- Leadership and communication skills
- An in-depth understanding of the processes and duties of a production and stage manager
- Technical terminology, knowledge and processes
- Budgeting, scheduling and resource allocation
- Problem-solving skills
Producing Masterclass
Led by Fezhah Maznan, participants of the Producing Masterclass explore the arts manager’s role from the perspectives of the artist, art form and audience.
Participants also engage in a hands-on session exploring Singapore’s arts scene, identifying opportunities and gaps, and looking at innovative methods to attract, engage and grow audiences.
Fundamentals of Fundraising Masterclass
Led by Jane Binks, board member of Teater Ekamatra, the Fundamentals of Fundraising Masterclass aims to:
- Empower arts managers and organisations from ethnic minority backgrounds with effective fundraising strategies
- Foster an inclusive and culturally sensitive approach to fundraising, addressing unique challenges faced by ethnic minority arts managers
- Provide actionable tools, including SWOT analysis, ideation and execution, and case for support development
- Cultivate a supportive community of fundraisers, promoting knowledge exchange and collaboration
